Research Project: RED RIVER SCOPE OF WORK: NUTRIENT CRITERIA PHASE I AND II

Location: Fayetteville, Arkansas

Project Number: 6226-63000-001-13
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2010

Objective:
Red River Nutrient Criteria Development Phase I project objectives include: (1) Develop a detailed work plan with dates and milestones. (2) Inventory parameters by state and sites (including the development of a GIS-based map of the entire Red River Basin) and compile an interstate database. (3) Delineate the Red River for criteria development, complete database design and data compilation, and identify data gaps and needs for modeling. (4) Complete data analyses and preliminary model development to understand nutrient interactions in the Red River Basin and options for criteria development.

Approach:
Task 1: Develop a detailed work plan with dates and milestones. This task will be accomplished by defining a detailed work plan with dates and milestones, while working with multiple state agencies that have a stake in the development of nutrient criteria in the Red River Basin. Task 2: Inventory parameters by state and sites (including the development of a GIS-based map of the entire Red River Basin) and compile an interstate database. This task will be completed by collecting databases from the various state agencies engaged in this project and compiling the information into one working database. This task will further involve initiating the design and data compilation of an interstate database, and the determination of a data index period to limit the database and make it similar between states. The development of a GIS-based map will occur that highlights sampling sties with available data in the interstate database. The progress of this task will be presented to a multi-state agency group involved this overall design of the detailed work plan and with an interest in the development of nutrient criteria in the Red River Basin. Task 3: Delineate the Red River for criteria development, complete database design and data compilation, and identify data gaps and needs for modeling. This task will require the completion of database design and data compilation, while identifying data gaps or needs to address weaknesses in an interstate database. Under this task, data analyses will begin to evaluate the establishment of endpoints for numeric nutrient criteria development. This project will not establish specific nutrient criteria, but will only aide in the development of an interstate database or stressor response model that can be used to develop nutrient criteria. Task 4: Complete data analyses and preliminary model development to understand nutrient interactions in the Red River Basin and options for criteria development. This task will complete database analyses, and possibly calibrate and validate a model of stressor response relations. The project will report progress to multi-state agencies involved with the work plan development and that have an interest in nutrient criteria development in the Red River Basin. Travel will be required to meet with state working groups and is supported within this project.
