Who We Are & What We Do
The Financial Litigation Unit (FLU) protects the interests of the citizens of the United States by collecting money owed to the United States and the victims of crime. This money comes from a wide variety of sources, including:
- Fines, special assessments, restitution, costs and penalties owed by criminal defendants
- Defaults on government loans
- Overpayments made by the United States under government programs
- Debts owed to the United States by debtors in Bankruptcy (such as taxes owed to the IRS)
- Money owed to the United States as a result of successful civil fraud prosecutions
- Environmental fines and penalties
- Other civil penalties and...
- Interest, costs and surcharges, when appropriate
