These maps show the distribution (at the census tract level) of 1999 cancer risk and noncancer hazard estimates. You can select to view the 50 States, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands.
The maps display the level of risk using 15 shades of the same color. The darker the color, the higher the cancer risk or noncancer hazard. EPA intends these maps to assist in identifying patterns of data across multiple census tracts, rather than pinpointing estimates in specific tracts. These estimates will help State and local governments identify areas to focus further data gathering (e.g., monitoring), investigate underlying data (e.g., emission inventory accuracy) and facilitate further assessment (e.g., where to focus local-scale assessments).
See more information on limitations in the 1999 assessment.
Navigation Tips (Continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii)
The use of these interactive maps is not recommended for dial-up connections. The following are recommendations for optimal map performance.
- Step 1. Use the "zoom tool" to click and drag to draw a box around the geographic area of interest.
- Step 2. Check the square check box next to the type of risk you are interested in viewing. This makes that risk category visible.
- Step 3. Click on the round radio button or circle next to the type of risk you are interested in exploring background data for. This makes that risk category "active" and all subsequent toolbar operations will be performed on the "active" layer.
- Step 4. Click on the "refresh map" button. The risk category you selected will now appear on the map and any functions you attempt using the tool bar will be performed on the risk category you made active using the radio button.
- Step 5. To view another risk category, un-check the check box and radio buttons you previously selected and check the ones next to the new risk category you are interested in exploring.
- You can create a map to print by clicking on the "print" button. A box will appear at the bottom of the screen where you can type in a title for your map. Once you have entered a title, click on the "create print page" button. A popup window will open and your custom map will appear in the window.
