The Indiana Department of Environmental Management provides information and technical assistance to public drinking water utilities, wastewater treatment facilities, livestock operations, local officials and individuals in communities hit by heavy rains and strong winds. For contact information and fact sheets, visit IDEM’s Storm Damage Update Web page.
IDEM is dedicated to protecting Hoosiers and the environment, and this mandate was reinforced as Governor Mitch Daniels signed a proclamation dedicating September 15 to 21, 2008, as Pollution Prevention Week.
Recent sampling has revealed high levels of cyanobacteria in Eagle Creek, Geist, and Morse Reservoirs that could present a moderate risk of skin irritation, rashes or other health problems for people exposed due to swimming in the reservoirs. Analysis of samples in the Eagle Creek Reservoir, however, did NOT detect the existence of the Microcystin toxin. Please use caution if you choose to recreate in these reservoirs.
Some species of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, produce toxins and at very high levels have potential health effects including liver damage for animals and humans.
Cynobacteria levels as high as 425,600 cells/ml were discovered in the Eagle Creek Reservoir. Levels in Geist and Morse Reservoirs exceeded 100,000. World Health Organization guidelines indicate that cell counts above 100,000 cells/ml of toxigenic algae present a moderate risk of adverse effects for those who are exposed due to recreation. The most likely result of exposure is rash or skin irritation.
The presence of cyanobacteria does not affect potable water supplies.
This energy management workshop will demonstrate how to reduce energy use and increase savings for water and wastewater treatment plants in the Indiana. It will provide interactive instruction on reducing energy use by using energy management approaches; opportunities to learn from experienced utility representatives on energy performance improvements and associated cost savings; and help to identify follow-up opportunities for EPA to further assist utilities.
