Climate Change in New England - Basic Information
Climate change has emerged as an environmental issue of central concern in New England, as it has in other parts of the country and the world. In New England, government at all levels as well as universities, non-profit groups, businesses and individuals have joined to conduct scientific research and educate the public about the issue, as well as to develop and implement innovative strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the region.
Since 1992, following the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which set an overall strategy for international intergovernmental efforts to address climate change, EPA New England has supported regional, state and local efforts through grants and technical assistance, promoting national climate and energy programs, outreach and education, and creating and supporting networks working to address climate change.
Federal, state, and local organizations and agencies in New England, as well as individual citizens are taking action to reduce their carbon footprint and promote alternative sources of energy production. This web site describes ways that EPA, both nationally and here in New England, is working on climate change solutions. It also tells of the work being done by states, communities and other private and public organizations. Finally, it offers citizens examples of how their own daily choices can make a difference.
