Background
Dearborn Refining Co. owned and operated a waste oil refining and oil processing facility at the site from the 1940s until 2005. Numerous companies sent used oil, waste oil and wastewater contaminated with oil to Dearborn Refining. Several investigations conducted by state and federal agencies over the years reveled violations for inadequate containment of waste oil. Two legal orders were issued to the company to address these conditions, but neither order was followed. Ownership of the property reverted to the city of Dearborn this February when the company failed to pay taxes. The city requested EPA assistance and is working closely with the Agency to clean up the site.
