Lead 90th Percentile Levels for 166 Large Water Utilities - Then and Now

After the rule was issued in 1991, water utilities were required to conduct initial monitoring for lead in 1992 and 1993. EPA reviewed data for 166 large water utilities that serve more than 50,000 and compared the results to the most recent monitoring data that utilities have reported to states (2000-2004). In their initial monitoring rounds, all 166 of the utilities were above the action level. During the most recent monitoring, only 15 of the 166 utilities exceeded the 15 ppb action level, demonstrating that corrosion control efforts taken by the utilities have largely been effective in controlling lead levels.
