Description:

Objective:

The objectives of this research project are to:

  1. produce transgenic energy and biomass crop plants with a dicamba-resistance gene;
  2. and test their tolerance to treatment with various levels of the herbicide, dicamba.

Progress Summary:

Soybean, tomato, and tobacco plants have been produced that are resistant to treatment with high levels of the herbicide, dicamba. These studies have been performed in the greenhouse and, in the case of soybeans, in the field. Transgenic lines have been identified that have levels of dicamba resistance well above that needed for commercial application of the technology.

Future Activities:

We will continue to conduct tests in the greenhouse of field plants that have been genetically engineered for resistance to dicamba. The objective will be to select the best transgenic plants to carry forward for potential commercialization. In addition, we will continue our basic studies of the dicamba O-demethylase enzyme system and the mechanisms by which the enzyme functions degrade dicamba in bacteria and plants.
