The overall goal of Task 2 is to improve existing models so that they provide more accurate responses and operate in a real-time fashion. The overall objective of Task 3 is to develop regionalized nowcast models for selected coastlines. It will also review active beach monitoring programs in the Great Lakes as reported by federal agencies and evaluate their potential for regionalized modeling based on indicators such as intensity of indicator bacteria and the desire for participation long term at a regionalized level. The long-term goal of Task 4 is to identify and better understand the influence of physical and biological processes on recreational water quality at Great Lakes beaches. The results will be used to aid in the development of functional and conceptual model that will help provide beach managers with reliable, science-based information on recreational water quality. Task 5 will modify and test rapid analytical methods for bacterial indicators at recreational beaches to ensure consistency in obtaining and interpreting results and enable transfer of technologies to local agencies. It will apply other analytical methods to document the dynamics of E. coli populations; identify bacterial, molecular, and/or chemical indicators of non-point sources; and determine concentrations of human-pathogenic microorganisms at coastal beaches. Collaborations with other organizations working with coastal processes and beach health will be pursued in Task 6.
