Status of the Leland Initiative in Madagascar

hndshk.gif (228 bytes) Policy Review (Objective 1): First Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed August 6th, 1996. A second round MOU was signed on 9 November, 1999 extending high-speed Internet access to two secondary cities.
satdish.gif (267 bytes) Technical Review (Objective 2): Equipment installed. Inauguration Day, May 16th, 1997, ribbon-cutting ceremony. US Ambassador Huddleston's remarks and Ministre des Postes et Telecommunications Ny Hasina Andriamanjato' s remarks (version en Francais) (version in English) at the Ground Station Inauguration. National Internet gateway is operational and commercial ISPs have been connected. (Photo of the ISPs at the ground station inauguration). Leland has installed two high speed POPs in two 'secondary' cities of Tamatave and Antsirabe in November, 1999.
teacher.gif (257 bytes) Internet Applications Review (Objective 3): Survey Completed. The Applications and Internet Training Strategy team trained 129 people in June/July, 1998 during their GLOBE, "train-the-trainer," and USAID Mission partner training workshop. Follow-up Internet trainings and another train-the-trainer was sponsored in August, 1999.
