Status of the Leland Initiative in Malawi

Policy Review (Objective 1): Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) was signed on September 9th, 1998.

Technical Review (Objective 2): Plan of Action approved by the MPTC in April and Internet Service Provider
64kb leased-line tariffs were announced in August. While multiple ISPs have not been licensed by the regulatory authority (MACRA), Leland has installed the national Internet gateway in Blantyre and 3 High-Speed Internet POPs in Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and Zomba in November, 1999. |

Internet Applications Review (Objective 3): Work with the
Mission's NGO's partners will commence when there are multiple private sector ISPs
offering full Internet - training slated for early, 2000. |
