Dr. Casas’ research interest is in detecting regions on the chromosomes where genes that influence economically important traits reside. Specific objectives are: 1) Validate previously identified quantitative trait loci for growth, reproduction, carcass composition, meat quality and health resistance traits in outbred populations of cattle of diverse germplasm, 2) Discover new quantitative trait loci and refine the location of previously detected quantitative trait loci for traits previously mentioned, 3) Develop Single Nucleotide Polymorphism markers to characterize variation of previously mentioned traits in beef cattle, 4) Develop statistical procedures to optimize the use of markers in selection procedures to predict genetic merit for economically important traits. He identifies cattle populations of diverse germplasm to collect biological samples and this information is made available to producers.
