John Haines
I am very pleased to announce that John Haines has been selected for the Associate Program Coordinator position, which was nationally advertised. John leaves an Oceanographer position with the St. Petersburg Field Center.

After obtaining his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, John joined the Survey as one of the initial members of the St. Pete office. He has since been involved in Coastal & Marine Program projects in the Great Lakes and participated in the nearshore experimental programs at Duck, North Carolina, in 1994 and 1997. His research record includes publications on nearshore flows, the impact of water-level variations of Gulf of Mexico wetlands, remote video monitoring, and decadal-scale variability in beach morphology. He has been a long-time member of our Program Council and served as Acting Team Chief Scientist for much of FY 1998.

He is currently enrolled in a DOI training assignment and just delivered (yes, he actually did) his third child (second son), so he's somewhat occupied. He will come into the position in August and relocate to Reston with his wife, Meredith, and expanded family probably in September. I look forward to working with John to keep the Program running on an even keel. With the NRC program review now complete, John and I and others will use the recommendations to prepare a new National Strategic Plan that will be used to guide coastal and marine research over the next several years.
