Research Project:
EVALUATION OF METARHIZIUM FORMULATIONS FOR BIOCONTROL OF SUGARBEET ROOT MAGGOT AND WIREWORMS IN THE RED RIVER VALLEY
Location: Pest Management Research Unit
Project Number: 5436-22000-012-08
Project Type:
Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 20, 2007
End Date: Sep 30, 2009
Objective:
1. Determine the efficacy of novel formulations of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae for biocontrol of the Sugarbeet Root Maggot (SBRM), under moderate to heavy insect pressure (located in northeastern ND).
2. Determine optimal at-planting placement of Metarhizium formulations for SBRM control.
3. Determine ability of combination Metarhizium-reduced risk pesticides to manage heavy SBRM insect pressure, and wireworms, in sugar beets.
Approach:
Replicated field trials in Walsh and Pembina counties of North Dakota, wherein the fungus is applied in different formulations developed by ARS,using different at-planting approaches (in-furrow, modified in furrow, spoon, banded with incorporation). The fungus will also be applied with low rates of clothianidin/Beta cyfluthrin, and imidacloprid to determine if synergism of the fungus can be obtained. A standard chemical treatment (granular terbufos, at planting, will serve as basis for comparison. Efficacy to be measured by root damage ratings, and yields.
