         Census Bureau Estimates Population of U.S. Outlying Areas,
                     First Figures Since 1990 Census
                                
                                
  The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released 1997 population
estimates for outlying areas of the United States, marking the first
update of population figures for Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the
Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa since the 1990 Census.

  The estimates are available in the Census Bureau's International
Database at http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idbnew.html. 

  The Census Bureau's estimates for mid-year 1997 and 1990 census data
are:

  The Census Bureau based its population estimates on births, deaths and
net migration. Those components are detailed for 1990 through 1997 in the
International Data Base on the Internet.
