Wannall III International Programs Center 301-457-1358 Census Bureau Estimates Population of U.S. Outlying Areas, First Figures Since 1990 Census The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released 1997 population estimates for outlying areas of the United States, marking the first update of population figures for Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa since the 1990 Census. The estimates are available in the Census Bureau's International Database at http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idbnew.html. The Census Bureau's estimates for mid-year 1997 and 1990 census data are: 1990 1997 Guam 133,152 145,780 U.S. Virgin Islands 101,809 114,483 Northern Mariana Islands 43,325 63,763 American Samoa 47,199 60,383 The Census Bureau based its population estimates on births, deaths and net migration.
