FHWA’s goal is to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries resulting from run-off-road crashes. As part of its safety strategy, FHWA recently enacted more stringent guidelines governing crash barriers along federally funded highways. Crashes involving vehicles that run off the road account for roughly one-third of the 42,000 annual highway-related deaths. To achieve FHWA’s goal, research and technology activities are conducted in run-off-road prevention and mitigation. Prevention includes speed management and local road improvements. Four areas are included in mitigation: crash test simulation and analysis, laboratory and crash testing, vehicle rollover/overturning, and advanced material and analysis.
