ABSTRACT

This report is a synthesis of research findings and current practices in controlling and protecting pedestrian traffic in work zones. The information presented here is based on a review of research reports and work zone manuals of a selection of state and city highway agencies, discussions with highway officials, and field observation of projects involving road work and building construction and maintenance. The report presents an assessment of the state-of-the-practice and makes recommendations for future revisions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
