CVO DRIVER FATIGUE AND COMPLEX IN-VEHICLE SYSTEMS

FOREWORD

This report is one of a series of nine reports produced as part of a contract designed to develop precise, detailed human factors design guidelines for Advanced Transportation Systems (ATIS) and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO). Among the other topics discussed in the series are functional description of ATIS-CVO, comparable systems analysis, task analysis of acceptance, and definition and prioritization of research studies.

This report documents ATIS and CVO system objectives and performance requirements. It provides basic information regarding the range of ATIS and CVO operational capabilities, a survey of ATIS and CVO systems, a preliminary set of ATIS and CVO scenarios, and a summary of system performance requirements.

16. Abstract

As one of a series of studies aimed at gathering data to develop human factors design guidelines for Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO), the present study utilized a driving simulator to study CVO drivers and (1) the effects of driver fatigue and (2) the effects of mental workload on objective and subjective indices of driver performance and opinion. Fatigue was induced through sleep deprivation and through a 90-minute simulator drive. Mental workload was manipulated through driving task load and ATIS complexity. Although the results indicated degraded driving performance under the sleep-deprived condition, performance on ATIS-related tasks was not affected by sleep deprivation. The implication of this and other results are detailed.
