In response to Mayor Adrian Fenty's nomination of Michelle Rhee as Chancellor of District of Columbia Public Schools, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said the following:

In nominating Michelle Rhee as Chancellor of District of Columbia Public Schools, Mayor Adrian Fenty has made a strong choice on behalf of students and families. Throughout her career, Michelle has challenged the status quo and proven that high standards and innovative leadership can make all the difference for struggling schools. She's an outstanding candidate, and families throughout our nation's capital will be fortunate to have her on their side.
