What is the A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc?

The A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc. was established in 1967 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the provision of high quality maternal, newborn, and well woman health services through the practice of midwifery. Housed in the offices of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), the Foundation collaborates closely with and complements the goals of the ACNM.

Because we are a non-profit organization, donations to the A.C.N.M. Foundation are tax deductible as allowed by law.

The A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc. engages in a broad program of activities including:

  • Sponsorship of studies, surveys, and research
  • Publication and dissemination of essays, treatises, and scientific and educational materials
  • Granting of scholarships to nurse midwifery students and post graduates
  • Participation with and support of related public and private non profit agencies and educational institutions
  • Sponsorship of educational and scientific meetings
  • Granting of fellowships for midwives who are in doctoral or post-doctoral studies.

History

The A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc. was created by members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives in 1967. It was incorporated in New York state for the purposed of advancing the public knowledge and understanding of nurse-midwifery. The Foundation is designated at a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and all donations to be tax deductible as allowed by law.

Our unique mission is to promote excellence in health care for women, infants and
families worldwide through the support of midwifery.

 

2007 - 2008 Accomplishments

  • Celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the incorporation of the A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc.
  • Estabelished the Midwifery Legacy Circle, in recognition of those who have make estate provisions or qualified planned gifts naming the A.C.N.M. Foundation as beneficiary
  • Awarded three Dorothea M. Lang Pioneer Awards to honor Chicago midwifery pioneers
  • Established the Deanne R. Williams Public Policy Fellowship, to be awarded in 2008
  • Awarded another Leadership Education Fellowship for a midwife to attend a week-long leadership program at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government
  • Supported two ACNM Annual Meeting education sessions on Women with Chronic Disease and Disability
  • Awarded seven basic midwifery education scholarships, including three from the Midwives of Color-Watson Scholarship Fund
  • Awarded one Graduate Education Fellowship to a midwife pursuing doctoral studies
  • Awarded another Hazel Corbin-Childbirth Connection Evidence-Based Midwifery Care Grant
  • Awarded another grant in honor of long-time midwifery supporter, the late W. Newton Long, MD
  • Awarded three Community Grants from non-cash program proceeds
  • Supported another four ACNM Leadership Seminars in new locations nationwide through support form the Charles Engelhard Foundation
  • Supported, in part, the 4th Revision of ACNM's internationally know "Life Saving Skills" training package
  • Provided support to ACNM for development of an innovative webinar CE traning program for RNs
  • Provided seed money to initiate ACNM's new Public Relations initiative, and launched the associated fundraising campaign - the Public Education Project (PEP)
