Partner Profile
Harvard University joined the EPA Green Power Partnership in 2005, and ranks among the nation's top university purchasers of renewable energy. The University's renewable energy portfolio has grown steadily; currently Harvard's green power purchases and on-site generation add up to over 30 million kWh, which accounts for nearly 10 percent of the total electrical load. The Harvard Green Campus Initiative, an inter-faculty organization, has worked with the Harvard community to boost its commitment to green power and anticipates that the current purchase will double in the next 1-2 years. Eight Harvard schools and departments have already caught the renewable energy wind. Most of their green power purchases were funded through savings generated from highly successful energy conservation projects (Harvard Divinity School, Harvard School of Public Health) and through annual promotional campaigns, directly involving thousands of students, staff and faculty (Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health). Other purchases have been incorporated into Campus Operations Budget (Kennedy School of Government), financed through a grant and a loan from the Harvard University Green Campus Loan Fund (Harvard Business School) or through fundraising (Harvard College). These purchases have also helped new buildings earn critical points towards LEED Certification (Harvard Real Estate Services, Radcliffe Institute). This long-term commitment to renewable energy has been gaining momentum, and new advocates across the Harvard campus have clearly voiced their support for the University's shift to green power. In 2005, the University President Lawrence H. Summers announced a $100,000 per year renewable energy fund. "Our support for renewable energy and green buildings affirms the university's commitment to developing and maintaining a campus that is beautiful, functional, and founded on sustainable principles", emphasized Summers.
