About ICRW

ICRW seeks to promote a world free of poverty in which women and men, girls and boys have equal opportunities to achieve their potential and realize their rights.

Our work brings women's lives and the issues and constraints they face into sharper focus.

Research to Insight

Founded in 1976, ICRW has earned a reputation as the leading international institution on gender and development.

ICRW tackles the complexities of the world's most pressing problems — poverty, hunger and disease — by demonstrating that a focus on women and gender is necessary for lasting social and economic change.  Our work begins with research that uncovers the realities of women's lives and brings into sharper focus the issues and constraints they face. Learn more about our Research Areas.

ICRW translates our findings into concrete actions.

Insight to Action

Research is our work, but ICRW is different from other think tanks. We are a "do-tank" that translates research findings into concrete steps that program designers, donors and policy-makers can take.

ICRW collaborates with partners in communities across the globe to integrate women's needs into the design and implementation of programs and policies. We develop practical solutions that achieve greater impact, ensure efficient use of resources, and most importantly, empower women to change their own lives and the lives of their communities for the better. ICRW leverages its action research into policy priorities for governments, international organizations and donor agencies to advance gender equality.

Action through Advocacy

Around the world, ICRW leverages its action research into policy priorities for governments, international organizations and donor agencies to advance gender equality. ICRW's powerful advocacy is rooted in empirical evidence that demonstrates unequivocally to policy-makers and program experts what needs to be done, how and why.

Our Mission:

ICRW's mission is to empower women, advance gender equality and fight poverty in the developing world. To accomplish this, ICRW works with partners to conduct empirical research, build capacity and advocate for evidence-based, practical ways to change policies and programs.
