Guadalupe Mountains National Park
McKittrick Canyon cuts through Frijole Ridge, a northeast-trending ridge along the southeastern flank of the Guadalupe Mountains. The El Capitan Reef track forms the core of Frijole Ridge, as a result, a nearly perfectly exposed cross section of the ancient reef is exposed along the sides of the canyon. The National Park Service has created a "Permian Reef Geology Trail" on mountain flank shown in the distance in this image.
