Objective:
Identify additional indicators of physiological and/or horticultural maturity that are indicative of storability; identify protocols for 1-MCP use that ensure predictable ripening; and characterize how pear fruit ripening and development of disorders are impacted by prolonged storage at the low 02 limit.
Approach:
Studies will be conducted in which fruit will be sampled sequentially over time in commercial orchards. Orchard temperature data will be collected beginning early in fruit development. Samples will be analyzed at harvest and after storage in air or controlled atmosphere to determine relationships between maturity at harvest and storage performance. Analyses of fruit quality components along with indicators of physiological development will be assessed using standard methods. The Mohr Digitest instrument will be used to assess firmness.
