DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE POLICY AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Criminal Division supervises the enforcement of all federal criminal
laws except those that are specifically assigned to other divisions.
However, the scope of the Criminal Division's jurisdiction is not limited to
criminal matters but extends to civil matters as well. The statutes
currently administered by the Criminal Division are set forth in
USAM 9-4.000.
The Criminal Division will provide assistance to a U.S.
Attorney in any matter within the jurisdiction of the Division.
The Division will also attempt to assist a U.S. Attorney in any
matter related to the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure or
Speedy Trial Problems. Finally, the Division will serve as a
conduit for a U.S. Attorney to a higher authority within or
without the Department on matters within its jurisdiction.
