Programs & Services

Fulbright MA TESOL

The U.S. Embassy Regional English Language Office announces a programmatic reorganization aimed at strengthening English language teaching capacity in South Africa.

Effective immediately, we will no longer administer the Summer English Teaching Institute (SETI), a six-week program held annually since 1986. Instead, resources will be redirected to fund qualified candidates for placement in U.S. Masters degree programs in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) – Selected applicants will be afforded an opportunity to obtain a Masters degree in TESOL in one or two-year programs at participating U.S. universities.
Applications are open

English Teaching Fellow Program (ETF)
The English Language Fellow Program provides American professional expertise in teaching English as a foreign or additional language by sending qualified American educators on ten-month fellowships to overseas academic institutions. Fellows work to enhance English teaching capacity, and to provide educators and learners with better academic, social and professional English language communication skills. Institutions interested in hosting a Fellow should contact the RELO office to discuss conditions, dates and objectives.

English Language Specialists (ELSpecs)
The English Language Specialist Program recruits United States specialists in the areas of English language teaching and Applied Linguistics for short term (two to six weeks) assignments abroad. These assignments may include curriculum projects, teacher training seminars, textbook development, English for Specific Purposes, and program evaluation. Please contact the RELO office if your institution or association is interested in organizing an English Language Specialist program.

English Teaching Reference Library
A selection of reference books and circulating materials on American English and the teaching of English as a second or additional language are located in our Johannesburg Information Resource Center. The catalog may be searched and material requested from any of our Public Affairs Information Resource Center.
