Research Project: ECONOMICS OF THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL PROGRAM FOR ARUNDO DONAX, AN INVASIVE WEED OF THE RIO GRANDE BASIN

Location: Beneficial Insects Research

Project Number: 6204-22000-019-14
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Dec 01, 2007
End Date: Jan 31, 2009

Objective:
Determine the economic value of the water lost to the invasive riparian weed Arundo donax and potential economic gain from water conservation following the biological control program.

Approach:
Estimates of the area infested with Arundo donax along the Rio Grande River and the greater Rio Grande Basin will be used to determine the economic impact of this weed. Economic estimates will be based on known water use parameters for A. donax, and other similar plants such as sugarcane. The value of water will be based on a mixed use model of agriculture, municipal, and environmental uses.
