Statements of Need

The Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) located at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, is a unique facility that provides hydrologic instrumentation support to the USGS and other Federal agencies and serves as a center for the collection and dissemination of information concerning hydrologic field instrumentation.

As data-collection needs are identified, the HIF is called upon to lead the search for instruments to fulfill the requirements. When a new instrument becomes available, laboratory and field testing are conducted to evaluate the instrument's performance. Tests are conducted under controlled environmental conditions to evaluate the instrument's accuracy and functional operation. The HIF also serves as a liaison between industry and the Division to ensure that instrument vendors are aware of WRD instrument needs. Additionally, vendors are encouraged to provide technical information on new instruments to the HIF for evaluation.
