TENTH ANNUAL BHJ ANNUAL AWARDS DINNERS TO BE HELD SEPTEMBER 18th

 On September 18th at the Steubenville Holiday Inn (1401 University Boulevard), BHJ will hold its tenth annual awards dinner. The dinner is $30 per person while a cash bar will be available. A social hour will start at 6:00 while dinner will be served at 7:00. Reservations may be made by calling the BHJ office 740-282-3685 or by mailing a completed reservation form available here with payment to:

The purpose of the event is to honor outstanding community service and work in the region. Our awardees are the following persons.

  • Lifetime Achievement. Don Bailey. Don is a retired professional from the West Virginia Department of Transportation and long-standing proponent of regional planning.

  • Public Service. Bernie Kazienko. Bernie is best known as a Brooke County Commissioner and the past Brooke County Sheriff; however, his “Bernie’s Kids” Program is a 30+ year program. Targeted to underprivileged children during the Holidays, the program illustrates his love of community. Bernie is “Mr. Brooke County.”

  • Special Recognition. Geary Bates. Geary has and continues to be the driving force behind improvements and expansion at the Jefferson County Airpark. He is the “man behind the bulldozer.” He was a founding member of the Jefferson County Airport Authority. He’s seen the airport grow from a dirt runway to a multi-purpose facility with a new terminal building, expanded runway and business park.

  • Volunteer. Susan Badgley. Susan is the heart and soul of Chester, West Virginia’s Volunteer Parks Program. She’s raised donations and completed projects for the 3rd Street playground renovation, Chester City Park, the Chester teen Skateboard Program, the Jack Owen’s Playground, and the Bird Sanctuary at Chester City Park.

 


NEW RIVER BRIDGE CROSSING MEETINGS

WELLSBURG - Area residents will have an opportunity to learn about efforts to establish a new bridge between Brooke and Jefferson counties and to express their opinions about the proposed span at four public meetings to be held in Brooke, Jefferson and Hancock counties this fall.

The West Virginia Division of Highways has initiated environmental and engineering studies to determine the best site between Wellsburg and Brilliant to build the bridge, following the recommendation of a study commissioned by the Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission and a committee of public officials and community members formed to oversee the study.

The Brooke County Commission was notified on Tuesday of the public meetings, which will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the following dates: Oct. 6 at Jefferson Community College; Oct. 7 at Brooke High School; Oct. 8 at Millsop Community Center in Weirton; and Oct. 9 at Buckeye North Middle School in Brilliant.

The commissioners were advised that citizens will have an opportunity to ask questions of representatives of the Federal Highway Administration, West Virginia Division of Highways and Ohio Department of Transportation at the meetings.

Opinions also may be submitted in writing to Gregory Bailey, Director-Engineering Division, West Virginia Division of Highways, Capitol Complex Building 5, Room 450, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. East, Charleston, WV 25305-0430.

Written comments should be submitted no later than Nov. 13.


F.Y. 2008 - 2011 TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM REVISION #5(a)

The Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Organization is accepting public review and comment regarding a proposed Revision #5 of the Fiscal Year 2008 - 2011 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), for the Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning (BHJMPO) Region.

The BHJMPO Technical Advisory and Policy Committees will consider adoption of Revision #5 during a joint meeting convening 4:30 p.m. Thursday September 18, 2008.  The BHJMPO will conduct the meeting at the Holiday Inn located at 1401 University Boulevard, Steubenville, Ohio. (1) project(s) to the Brooke County, WV TIP: (1) replace tie down bolts connecting cables on the US-22 Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Ohio River between Steubenville, OH and Weirton, WV.

Those persons wishing to review the proposed revision may request a copy of the program of projects by contacting the BHJMPO office at (740) 282-3685 on or before 4:00 p.m. Wednesday September 17, 2008. The office is located at 124 North Fourth Street, Second Floor, Steubenville, OH 43952. Business contact hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays Monday through Friday. Direct all inquiries to Mr. Michael J. Paprocki, Transportation Study Director or, in his absence, Ms. Linda J. Taylor, Office Manager. Add one (1) project(s) to the Brooke County, WV TIP: (1) replace signals and upgrade circuits at the Birch Street rail crossing in the Half Moon Industrial Park in Weirton, WV
