Western Region Geography: Southwest Geographic Science Team

Western Region Geography is a team of cartographers, geographer, remote sensing specialists, scientists, and information specialists who contribute to the local, regional and national goals of the Geography discipline.

The Geography discipline's mission is to collect and distribute geospatial data, and contribute to the progress in the use of these data and other related earth science information for users worldwide. The Geography scientists and specialists in Flagstaff participate in furthering these goals through:

  • the production and distribution of basic cartographic and geographic spatial data of the country,
  • participation in the creation of geospatial data policy and standards,
  • leadership for the management of earth science data and related information,
  • collection, processing, and distribution of remote sensing data of the Earth, and
  • contributions to the understanding and application of geospatial data and technology.

The Western Region Geography's Southwest Geographic Science Team (SGST) was formed in 2002 to provide expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and database design and delivery, and to implement cartographic products and spatial analysis for research science. Besides their own research focuses, scientists in the SGST are working in an interdisciplinary fashion with other disciplines of the USGS (Water, Geology and Biology), as well as in a university, non-profit or other governmental agency capacity to support a high-technology approach to environmental monitoring.
