Research Project: AREWIDE PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM FOR RUSSIAN WHEAT APHID AND GREENBUG: NEBRASKA

Location: Wheat, Peanut and Other Field Crops Research

Project Number: 0500-00044-019-09
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Feb 01, 2006
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to collect and evaluate information on the area-wide pest management of the Russian wheat aphid and greenbug, and to disseminate the information through development and administration of effective outreach and education programs.

Approach:
Areawide pest management approaches for the Russian wheat aphid and greenbug were explored and evaluated during a multi-year project involving close collaboration between grower cooperators, researchers, and educators. We will finalize data acquisition for that project, but most importantly we will evaluate and summarize information acquired during the previous 4-years and undertake an intensive outreach effort based on that information. The effectiveness of an integrated farming system approach, based on efficient crop rotations, resistant wheat varieties, and information based pest management strategies will be the focus of the outreach program.
