Research Project:
EVALUATION OF REPELLENTS, INHIBITORS, BARRIER TREATMENTS, AND ULV INSECTICIDES, AND OTHER NEW PRODUCTS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Location: Mosquito and Fly Research Unit
Project Number: 6615-32000-043-26
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: May 02, 2008
End Date: Aug 30, 2009
Objective:
To evaluate the efficacy of repellents, inhibitors, toxic baits, barrier spray treatments, insecticides, and other novel insect control methods to prevent disease transmission and reduce populations of key mosquito and sand fly vectors of militarily important diseases as well as relevant biting fly and filth fly species in various habitats in disease endemic areas of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Approach:
The efficacy of repellents, inhibitors, barrier sprays, and ULV insecticides in controlling important mosquito and sand fly vectors (as well as other biting and filth fly species) in Sub-Saharan Africa is significantly different from the efficacy shown in the laboratory using inbred colonies or in field trials with North American species.
