The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program produces monthly and annual employment, unemployment, and labor force data for Census regions and divisions, States, counties, metropolitan areas, and many cities, by place of residence. More »
Next Releases:
- Data for all LAUS areas (including micropolitan areas, counties, cities, etc.) for September 2008 are scheduled to be released on Wednesday, November 5, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.
- Regional and State Employment and Unemployment: October 2008 is scheduled to be issued on Friday, November 21, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.

In September, 21 states and the District of Columbia
recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 23
states registered decreases, and 6 states had no change.
Nonfarm payroll employment rose in 9 states and fell in
41 states and the District of Columbia.

Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment (Monthly)
October 29, 2008
Unemployment rates were higher in September than a year earlier in 349
of the 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 14 areas, and unchanged in 6
areas. Among the 310 metropolitan areas for which nonfarm payroll data
were available in September, 140 areas reported over-the-year employment
gains, 164 reported losses, and 6 had no change.

February 29, 2008
Annual average unemployment rates declined in 28 states and the District of Columbia,
rose in 16 states, and were unchanged in 6 states from 2006. Employment-population
ratios decreased in 28 states, increased in 17 states and the District of Columbia,
and remained the same in 5 states.
