IRIS Literature Screening Verification
As part of the FR notice (69 FR 5971) issued on February 9, 2004, announcing the annual IRIS agenda, EPA stated that it would use findings from the recent IRIS literature screening level review project as the basis for a systematic update of the IRIS database. The purpose of EPA's screening level review was to reach a preliminary determination regarding the need for a full reassessment. That determination was needed based on an evaluation of new health effects literature that could potentially result in significant changes to existing toxicity values or cancer weight-of-evidence designations. The FR notice stated that EPA would begin performing more in-depth reviews of the extant health literature to confirm results from the literature screening. The IRIS summaries have been updated to confirm that existing assessments are current for the substances that were found to be without significant new health effects information that could result in a change to the existing data in IRIS. Also, the FR notice requested submission of scientific information from the public to confirm the results of the literature screening review. Confirmatory statements were added on September 19, 2004, June 22, 2005, August 15, 2005 and July 5, 2006 to a total of 56 IRIS Summaries. Since then, another 10 confirmations have been completed for 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine, p-bromodiphenyl ether, tribromochloromethane, benzotrichloride, brominated dibenzofurans, 4,4'-methylene bis(N,N'-dimethyl)aniline, bromate, quinoline, diethyl-p-nitrophenylphosphate, and 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane. These confirmations will be added to the IRIS Summaries on 09/28/2006. The results of the screening project were added to the IRIS database beginning in 2003 and continue as an ongoing project.

IRIS Literature Screen Verification
The IRIS Program has added statements to certain existing IRIS Summaries confirming that the health effects information upon which the assessment was based is still current. This is to follow up on our February 9, 2004 FR notice (69 FR 5971) announcing the annual IRIS agenda. In that notice, EPA announced that we would use findings from our recent IRIS literature screening project (the results of which were added to IRIS beginning in 2003) as the basis for a systematic update of the IRIS database. We explained that we would begin performing a more in-depth review of the extant health literature to confirm results from the literature screen. For those substances confirmed to be without new health effects information likely to change an existing assessment, we stated that we would update IRIS Summaries to indicate this finding. Also, in the FR notice we sought submission of scientific information from the public to confirm the results of the literature screen review. Confirmatory statements were added on September 19, 2004, June 22, 2005, and August 15, 2005 to a total of 48 IRIS Summaries. Confirmatory statements for 8 additional substances have been added to IRIS Summaries for methyl methacrylate, nickel refinery dust, 1,2-diphenylhydrazine, tetrachlorocyclopentadiene, trichlorocyclopentadiene, ammonium methacrylate, chlorocyclopentadiene, and t-butylchloride on 07/05/2006. This will be an on-going project.
