African Dust Presentations

Gene Shinn gave his dust talk to two very different groups of people in a 2-week period in November. The first presentation was made to Trustees of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation, who were convening in Puerto Rico. The talk included a short field trip to examine coral reefs off the island's east coast by snorkeling. Locals confirmed and reinforced the presence and health effects of dust during the summer months. The second presentation was given at a banquet held by the Southeastern Chapter of the Explorers Club at the Ft. Lauderdale Hilton Hotel.

In both cases, feedback from the audience provided useful contacts in the medical profession. The program chair of the Explorers Club, a retired pathologist, explained how he had contracted an Aspergillus infection of the sinuses while on a cruise to Panama. He told of low visibility during the cruise due to African dust in the southern Caribbean and noted that most people on the ship had developed respiratory problems and didn't know why. African dust contains many viable species of Aspergillus.
