USAID has undertaken a wide variety of tourism projects—123 projects in 72 countries since 2000—that support Agency objectives of conserving natural resources, stimulating economic development, and alleviating poverty. These projects have been catalogued and documented in a searchable database that provides links to project descriptions and associated documents. This information was analyzed to produce the document, USAID and Sustainable Tourism: Meeting Development Objectives (3.077MB PDF), which describes the range of tourism programs and activities supported by the Agency.

USAID is evaluating this tourism portfolio to see where it can replicate and improve upon results achieved, and is developing guidelines and tools to assist field missions and headquarters offices with the design and implementation of successful sustainable tourism programs. Highlights of the Agency’s tourism portfolio were presented to the global tourism community by former Administrator Andrew Natsios (51KB PDF) in October 2004 at the UN-WTO’s Sustainable Tourism Policy Forum.
