2006 Activities

May 10 - May 10, 2006 – AFSRC scientists will present two talks at the Spring 2006 Nutrient Management Planners CEU Training at West Virginia University’s Willow Bend Experiment Farm in Monroe County. Dr. William Clapham, Plant Physiologist,  will present “Risk management of Fertility Decisions and fertility Methods on the Pasture Paddocks at Willow bend, Experiment Farm” and Dr. Douglas Boyer, Hydrologist, will present “Nutrient Losses in Pastureland Due to Karst Topography.”

May 5-6, 2006 - AFSRC will be jointly organizing with The Mountain State University Medicinal Botanicals Program and the West Virginia Herb Association the First Spring Conference “Production and Marketing of Vegetables and Herbs.” The conference will be held on the MSU campus. April 6-7, 2006 - The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center in Beaver, WV held a planning workshop on small ruminant research on April 6 and 7, 2006.

February 9, 2006 - As part of the Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center on-going outreach efforts to the community, Joyce Ruckle, Biologist for ARS will present a seminar on Basic Botany for the Greenbrier County, WV master gardener program.

January 28, 2006 – Dr. Jorge Ferreira will present a seminar “Artemisia annua as a Potential Anti-Cancer Source” at the Mountain State University Medicinal Botanicals Program in Beckley, WV.

2005 Activities

October 18, 2005 – Dr. Douglas Boyer, Hydrologist, presented a talk about agricultural impacts on karst aquifer water quality. The talk was part of two-day workshop “Growing Communities on Karst” held at the West Virginia state fairgrounds in Fairlea, West Virginia.

September 16-17, 2005 - The Mountain State University Medicinal Botanicals Program and the USDA/ARS Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center held their Fourth Annual Symposium on Medicinal Plants at Mountain State University, Beckley, WV, on September 16-17, 2005. The theme was “Appalachian Opportunities: Producing, Using, and Marketing Herbs and Non-Timber Forest Products.”
