In 1999, USAID's Displaced Children & Orphans Fund commissioned photographer Martin Lueders to produce a photobook of children who had participated in four DCOF-funded programs for children affected by war. Lueders visited project sites in Angola, Liberia, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone.

In April 1998, the War Victims Fund commissioned photographer Noah Hendler to visit Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. All of the people interviewed and photographed for the original photobook benefited from the assistance that is provided through efforts of U.S. private voluntary organizations that received or are receiving funding the USAID's War Victims Fund.
