Ray Carruthers

is involved in a variety of research activities associated with the development of biological control of weeds, the assessment of insect and plant population dynamics, and the application of computer technology to aid in understanding these processes.  Currently his three primary research project involved the Biological Control of Saltcedar, Yellow Starthistle dynamics and management, and Assessment of Invasive Ludwigia spp. in California Waterways. This work is done cooperatively with other units scientists and scientists from other Federal State and Local institutions. He also participates with NASA scientists in a project aimed at using remote sensing and computer modeling to help understand the dynamics and impact of invasive species on agricultural and natural ecosystems.

Saltcedar dying from biocontrol agent

South American Water primrose (Ludwigia spp.) infesting the Laguna de Santa Rosa in California.

Biological control of saltcedar has been effectively implemented across test sites in several western states.

Sampling for yellow starthistle plant growth and insect natural  enemy impact has been assessed under both lab and field  conditions.

And has included extensive remote sensing evaluations.
