Research Project: ENHANCED DISINFECTION OF ADENOVIRUSES WITH UV IRRADIATION

Location: Agroecosystem Management Research

Project Number: 5440-12000-060-05
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Feb 01, 2007
End Date: Jan 31, 2009

Objective:
The objectives of this research are to investigate the use of polychromatic medium pressure and pulsed UV sources for inactivation of a number of adenovirus types, and compare the results of the conventional cell culture assays to those using an animal infectivity method.

Approach:
The approach of this research included the following: 1) Perform a comprehensive literature review; 2) Determine the effectiveness of low and medium pressure UV light to inactivate human respiratory and enteric adenoviruses; and 3) Compare the UV inactivation of select animal adenovirus as assayed using both a cell culture and an animal infectivity method.
