Wednesday, July 29, 1998 -- The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) recently released a new CD-ROM resource guide that will assist state and local transportation planners with implementing linear referencing systems (LRS) used with geographic information systems (GIS).

"This product is in keeping with President Clinton’s commitment to reinvent government," said BTS Deputy Director Robert A. Knisely. "The resource guide will serve the public better because we’ve collected data that was previously widely scattered throughout the country and made it conveniently available in one package."

The resource guide which provides information for implementing LRS/GIS data provides access to a large collection of published materials in the public domain as well as documents found on the Internet. It provides an overview on the subject with links to detailed papers that specifically address particular topics and issues.

The CD-ROM contains more than 100 scanned documents on LRS models, LRS implementation applications, state reference manuals, and state and national research reports. The resource guide also contains an example of a robust implementation of LRS in GIS by the Wisconsin DOT.

A discussion of future research and technology directions for implementation of LRS in GIS is included in the resource guide with access to some of the most current literature on these topics. A keyword searchable database is provided for the scanned documents as well as direct links to Internet sites containing more documents on the subject.

To order a copy of the CD-ROM, contact the Bureau of Transportation Statistics by phone on (202) 366-DATA, by FAX on (202)366-3640, by email to orders@bts.gov, or by writing to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics at BTS/DOT, 400 Seventh Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. 20590.
