Acting Regional Administrator Bharat Mathur

Bharat Mathur was appointed Acting Regional Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 in January 2009. As Acting Regional Administrator he leads the implementation of federal environmental programs in the Great Lakes states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Deputy Regional Administrator. Mr. Mathur previously served as Acting Regional Administrator for four months beginning in May 2008, for six months beginning in April 2006, and for 16 months beginning in April 2004.

He came to EPA in January 2000 as director of the Air and Radiation Division after a lengthy career with the state of Illinois, where he managed Illinois EPA offices dealing with air pollution, hazardous and solid waste, and Clean Water Act programs.

He has served on numerous state and national committees to develop environmental policies and programs, and has consulted with government agencies in India, China, Indonesia, Korea and Mexico in the areas of waste management, air pollution control and pollution prevention.
