The USGS is investigating numerous sites for selenium toxicity. One recent study by the Minerals Program concerns possible selenium contamination associated with phosphate mining in southeastern Idaho. See "Links" section for additional studies.

Study of environmental contaminants associated with phosphate mining in southeast Idaho a multi-institutional multi-disciplinary research effort by the USGS Geologic Division Minerals Program in collaboration with Biology Resources Division, Water Resources Resources, and other Federal and State agencies.

The USGS is studying possible trace element contaminants associated with phosphate mining in the northern Rocky Mountains.

Comparison of studies in Idaho and at Kesterson NWR shows that these are not simple cases of point-source contamination. Other selenium cycles may exist, and further study is needed to better understand selenium in the enviroment, to address its potential impact on human and animal health, and to better understand other trace elements that pose risks.
