West Indies - The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), awarded the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Unit (SRU) a $250,000 grant for several activities, including a Caribbean training course in seismology and tsunami warnings. This class is scheduled to run from June 25th-30th and is part of a multi-national, regional project to strengthen the capacity of the SRU to detect, monitor, and provide early warnings of tsunamis and related geologic hazards.
The SRU is establishing a Caribbean tsunami warning system with funding from USAID. A recent course provided participants with a better understanding of the science behind tsunami warnings and exposed them to operational best-practices of tsunami warning centers. Over 40 participants from more than 20 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America attended.
Since 2000, the USAID has provided more than $142 million in response to the devastating effects of hurricanes and tropical storms throughout Central America and the Caribbean. The Caribbean also continues to be vulnerable to natural disasters such as tsunamis and major earthquakes.
