WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today that Barbara Turner, a former top official at the agency, was one of nine public servants to receive the 2005 Service to America Medals. This national awards program honors outstanding federal employees who have made significant contributions to our nation.

Turner, who recently retired from USAID, is being honored for many achievements during her 40-year career. She worked her way up to the highest levels at USAID, where she played a critical role in the Agency's work in Egypt, the former Soviet Union, Bosnia and multiple other countries. Turner was a Deputy Assistant Administrator at the Agency and currently lives in Falls Church, Virginia.

"No single officer in the Agency has had the impact she has had over the course of her career," said Administrator Andrew S. Natsios. "Ms. Turner's distinguished career should be held up as a model for future government leaders."

The Service to America Medals winners were recognized at a dinner and awards ceremony in Washington, DC. Specifically, Turner was awarded the Career Achievement Medal, which recognizes a federal employee for significant accomplishments throughout a lifetime of achievement in public service. This medal is accompanied by a $10,000 award.

The Service to America Medals (www.servicetoamericamedals.org) were created in 2002 by the Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to revitalizing federal government service, and Atlantic Media Company (publisher of Government Executive, National Journal and The Atlantic).

The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years. For more information on USAID, visit: http://www.usaid.gov.
