Research Project: RACES OF MAIZE NATIVE TO THE SOUTHWESTERN UNITED STATES

Location: North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station, Ames, Iowa

2004 Annual Report

4.What were the most significant accomplishments this past year?
D. Progress Report. This report serves to document research conducted during FY 2004 under a Specific Cooperative Agreement between ARS and Iowa State University. Additional details of research can be found in the report for the parent CRIS 3625-21000-044-00D, "Plant Genetic Resource and Information Management." This is a new SCA, initiated in April. It's purpose is to characterize the maize accessions originating in the southwestern U.S., phonologically and morphologically. Trait data will be used to develop an understanding of the racial makeup of native American maize germplasm, and the traits which help it survive in its native habitat. In 2004, plantings of 158 accessions were made in a replicated design in Farmington, NM at the New Mexico State University Agricultural Science Center and in Ames, IA at the North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station. Data collection is in progress.
