Hard Winter Wheat Regional Nursery Program

Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF WAXY (AMYLOSE-FREE) WINTER WHEAT CULTIVARS FOR THE CENTRAL GREAT PLAINS

Location: Grain, Forage & Bioenergy Research

Project Number: 5440-21000-029-23
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 01, 2005
End Date: Aug 31, 2010

Objective:
Identify waxy winter wheats with properties suitable for commercial application as wheat cultivars in the central Great Plains.

Approach:
This will be a joint effort between ARS, who has derived, and will continue to develop, waxy winter wheats, and Kansas State University, who will be responsible for the conduct of replicated yield trials at two Kansas locations per year. ARS will provide seed of approximately 30 advanced waxy wheat breeding lines per year, and Kansas State University will gather data on grain yield, test weight, winter survival, disease resistance and other agronomic properties. Both partners will collaborate in designing the experiments and interpreting the results.
