WASHINGTON, DC -- Andrew Natsios, Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), today announced the appointment of Michael Magan as Director of the Agency's Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.
"Under Michael's leadership, the Center will enhance our current partnerships with faith-based and community-based organizations. Because such organizations are able to address the deepest and most profound needs of human society, these partnerships help USAID to improve the lives of citizens in developing nations," said Natsios.
In accord with President Bush's Executive Order creating the Center, its goal is to ensure that faith-based organizations face fewer bureaucratic barriers and compete on an equal footing with other contractors for federal dollars.
USAID has a long history of working with faith-based organizations. Since its inception in 1961, USAID has done extensive work with relief organizations affiliated with religious institutions. Today, 25 percent of USAID's partners are faith-based organizations.
Magan has held a number senior policy posts. He most recently served as a high-level official at the U.S. Department of Labor, where he oversaw international programs to combat child labor and human trafficking. He has also served in senior posts at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the International Republican Institute as well as serving in staff positions in Congress.
USAID's Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives can be reached at 202-712-4080.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for more than 40 years.
