Research Project:
FIELD TESTING OF APHID RESISTANT WHEAT BREEDING LINES
Location: Wheat, Peanut and Other Field Crops Research
Project Number: 6217-21000-007-08
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Aug 31, 2006
End Date: Aug 30, 2011
Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to conduct field-based experiments to evaluate agronomic traits of ARS-developed aphid (Russian wheat aphid, greenbug, bird cherry-oat aphid) resistant breeding lines.
Approach:
The agronomic traits of aphid resistant wheat breeding lines will be evaluated in field trials throughout Oklahoma. Advanced wheat breeding lines with high levels of genetic resistance to aphids will be included in replicated tests in a network of Oklahoma performance trials for evaluation of a variety of traits influencing yield performance (i.e., temperature-insensitive germination, winter-dormancy, stay-green, lodging, shattering, disease resistance, etc.) and end-use quality assessment (wheat milling attributes, physical dough quality, and actual baking performance). Aphid resistant wheat experimental lines showing high performance in these trials will be selected for further testing with potential consideration of cultivar release.
