“ . . . come in and see what we have for you!”

Welcome to the United States Geological Survey web site for water resources in Louisiana. At this site, we present all sorts of useful information regarding one of Louisiana's greatest resources—water. Here you will find both real-time and historical data on many of the rivers, streams, and bayous in the state, as well as ground water, water quality, and water use data. There are projects and reports available that cover a wide variety of water-related topics, ranging from broad-based regional studies to tightly focused, in-depth investigations of specific regions in Louisiana. Many federal, state, and local agencies as well as individual citizens rely on the data we gather and present here when making decisions regarding everything from ensuring public safety to scheduling recreational activities. So come in and see what we have for you!

If you want to use Google Earth:
You will have to download and install the free Google Earth software. Google Earth software requires an Internet connection, and it is an application written for broadband internet access, so a dial-up internet connection will likely be too slow. The minimum and recommended configurations for PC, Mac, and Linux systems are available here. Make sure your system qualifies before you install Google Earth.

Annual Water Data Reports: A New Look – 20 March 2008
For many years, the annual water data report was available only in book form. It was a convenient, if costly, way to provide the water data we collect to the public. It was easy to use, portable, and very popular, but if you didn't have the book, you didn't have the data. Putting the reports online a few years ago solved the availability problem, but it introduced a huge usability problem—until now. (more)

LAWSC incorporates Google Earth in website for easy data access – 25 May 2007
The Louisiana Water Science Center has added a Google Earth interface to its web pages to make finding the data you want easier and better than ever before. Google Earth is a web-enabled mapping software that lets us place markers on satellite imagery and attach information to each marker. With this new system, people looking for information about streams in a particular area can very quickly find the most recent stages/elevations, and with a click or two, they can access the full range of data available though our NWISWeb system. LAWSC provides easy flood tracking on the web – 25 May 2007
Flooding is a concern for everyone in Louisiana. Floods demand immediate and decisive action by governmental entities, businesses, and individual citizens, all of whom have to make critical decisions that directly impact the extent, duration, and mitigation of losses resulting from flooding. How high will the water get? How long will the flood last? What areas will be affected? What roads will become unpassable? Will it reach my house? Should I move valuables out of my house? If so, when should I start? Should I consider evacuation? These are only a few examples of the questions that must be addressed when the threat of a flood arises. (more)
